5 Fabulous and Easy DIY Centerpieces for Thanksgiving

So everyone is coming to your house for Thanksgiving this year? Great! You have enough to worry about, preparing the food and getting ready for company. The last thing you have time to do is design an elegant centerpiece, right? Flowers are expensive, and not necessarily the most creative choice—plus, they only last a few days.

Do you need a quick way to wow your guests, while having a little fun with the process? Here are five simple but elegant options, relying on nature’s bounty to add some holiday magic:

1. Gilded Pumpkins

Paint one medium-sized pumpkin and several smaller gourds with gold spray paint. Once dry, set them on top of a puddled length of velvet, or satin fabric, in a rich autumn color of your choice. Consider adding autumn-hued netting with tiny battery-operated white lights, spread under the fabric—or a garland of silk autumn leaves in browns, crimsons, and golds under your gilded pumpkins.

2. Delicate Dried Blooms

Have a white hydrangea bush outside? Know someone who does? Gather the blooms in late summer and let them dry. (They keep beautifully so you can use them year after year.) Fresh or dried, you can introduce these lush blooms around white pumpkins, interspersed with tall white taper candles in simple candlesticks, for a super-fast and elegant centerpiece.

3. Twinkle, Twinkle

Spray-paint three pumpkins of different sizes with Krylon’s Looking Glass paint for a mercury-glass, reflective centerpiece to celebrate the season with a little modern edge. Add several candles in glass votives to increase the reflective effect.

4. Fill ‘Er Up

Start with a large glass bowl (or a canister, or an apothecary jar) with tall sides. Fill it with a collection of small gourds, or pumpkins, or even “Christmas” ornaments in autumn shades. Tuck a strand of tiny battery-operated lights inside the bowl too, and you’re done! (Consider using the same container and lights for other holidays too—simply switch your collection of items to something more suitable for the season.)

5. Keep It Simple

Place a row of same-sized, small white (or orange) pumpkins down the length of your table, on top of a coordinating table runner.

Regardless of how you decorate your table, what foods you cook, or how you plan to celebrate, enjoy your Thanksgiving! This is the season to stop, count your blessings, and relish life’s joys.
